Ellen writes in a chatty, personable manner and reading her book is almost like sitting down for coffee with a sharing mentor.  She covers just about everything, from making your business plan, charting expenses and choosing your school and vehicle, through handling your canine and human customers, tips on a tight route, the pros and cons of cell phones vs. land lines, marketing, e-mails, anything you can think you need to know and lots of stuff you haven’t even thought of. The main thing is that you’ll be out there making tons of money if you follow much of the advice in this book. Her book is full of good common sense advice on many aspects of mobile grooming. Anyone starting out MUST buy and read this book – let it be your first business expense! Even established mobile groomers are sure to find lots of good information here. A book FINALLY written on the insanity I call mobile pet grooming. Where was this book back in 1997 when I needed you most? I am almost half way through, and already have gotten a few “aha moments.” Sometimes the simplest of tips are the most profound.  Ellen's tips will really save you time. Two New Books

    Something very exciting is happening!  I’ve been contacted by a few of our internet friends here at petgroomer.com telling me that they have written or are writing a book.  This is great news for our community.  We need information.  When we write, we are sharing knowledge, wisdom, experience and our expertise.  People who read can take both shortcuts and giant steps at the same time.  I know how important reading has been to me in my grooming career.  When I became interested in grooming I read everything I could find on the topic.  It is my pleasure to give you a heads up on two new books written by our bloggers:

Building Repeat Customers

    Have you taken a good look at your calendar? If you add up two - six week appointments, you will wind up in the month of December, our busiest time of year. Now is the time to book your customers right up to the holidays, gently nudging them into a maintenance groom schedule. This is a golden opportunity for us that only occurs once a year.

    Customers who are on a maintenance schedule are the lifeblood of a mobile grooming business. This is important to us because we need to know where we are going and whom we are grooming everyday. To be efficient, mobile groomers need to drive as little as possible and to have the right mix of bath and haircut dogs everyday.

    Making the leap from a customer to a “mobile customer” was a lucky accident for me. At the end of my first summer, I looked at my calendar and I saw the holidays approaching. I began asking my customers if they wanted to make appointments through December. They could have the day they preferred and be guaranteed a grooming appointment at a time of year when I am booked solid. This way they would be assured to have a clean doggy through Thanksgiving and Christmas. This would be helpful to me as I could book my grooms by town and by grooming schedule to cut down on the driving time. It made perfect sense. As January rolled around, the majority of these customers were willing to book appointments for the next three to six months. I was on my way to success.

    Looking back what had occurred was a shift in these customers “grooming mentality.” A simple appointment had turned into a grooming relationship. The pet owners could see the benefit when their dog was on a maintenance schedule. By offering your customers an appointment now through the holidays, you can start building a solid foundation for your business. Don’t be afraid to ask. The only thing your customer can say is “No thank you.”
