A Visit From The Mobile Vet

It sure was nice to be on the receiving end of mobile services for my poodle Jesse last week. Now I can relate to how my customers feel when I show up to groom their pets. I searched out a mobile vet because my dog does poorly when he needs to see a doctor no matter what I do. His last visit resulted in twenty-four hours of diarrhea, including waking hubby I and up all night. On another occasion, my poodle almost keeled over in the back seat of my car as we headed home from a visit. Have you ever seen a dog almost faint? I have and it’s not pretty. I dreaded taking him back.

Mobile vet care is similar to mobile grooming in many ways. The best part is the doctor comes to you and your pet is seen immediately. There is no waiting involved. You don’t have to drive back and forth to the vet’s office where your cat or dog may get upset around other pets like mine does. My poodle has a sixth sense when he is headed to the doctors office. If tears could flow, they would! The panting starts and it’s downhill from there.

So, when Jesse started shaking his head and scratching his ear I knew we were in trouble. Suspecting an ear infection, I did not want to take him in for a visit. Since we had a mobile vet in our area, I did some googling and found Dr. DiMaria of Pets Aloud Mobile Vet and made an appointment. Yes, I did have to pay a Housecall Fee but it was worth it to me. When she showed up to examine Jesse I felt a sigh of relief. This was going to make caring for my poodle so much easier.

They had everything on board from a lab to an operating room and it was sparkling clean!

 

In less then twenty minutes my poodle was examined, treated and back in the house without a peep. I was hooked and so was Jesse!

When you’re thinking mobile services think outside the box. The more I see the more I am able to confirm what I have always known. The mobile universe continues to expand in so many different directions, giving a wide range of options to pet owners who are looking for specialty services for their furry best friend.

I figured it out! Since 2005 I have been to over thirty grooming conventions! That means I have had the opportunity to talk with pet stylists far and wide; from every walk of life about grooming and mobile grooming. Many I talk to have a shop and are considering adding mobile services. Some want to sell their shop and go mobile. Some want to start out mobile. Guess what? They always ask me the same question:

“Will pet owners pay more for mobile services?” The answer is, “Yes!”

Keep in mind that you have to do your research first to see if mobile grooming is a good fit for you and where you live. That being said, if you’ve answered “yes,” mobile grooming can be customized to fit almost any lifestyle and personality. I have seen it done. Here is one good reason why. If you look at statistics on the Internet, you will see that there are plenty of dogs and cats in our country.

Dogs

• There are approximately 78.2 million owned dogs in the U.S.A.
• Thirty-nine percent of U.S. households own at least one dog
• Most owners (60 percent) own one dog
• Twenty-eight percent of owners own two dogs

Cats

• There are approximately 86.4 million owned cats in the U.S.A.
• Thirty-three percent of U.S. households own at least one cat
• Fifty-two percent of owners own more than one cat
• On average, owners have two cats (2.2)

I can tell you from experience that there are just not enough mobile groomers to go around. When one of my customers move and is looking for mobile services in their new location, often times they cannot find a good mobile stylist to take my place. There are two problems -Either there are no mobiles servicing that area or the existing mobiles are full and not taking new customers. I have also seen other mobiles looking for services for their customers who are moving. Nobody on the grooming forums respond.

If you are on the fence about going mobile this could be a golden opportunity. Mobile grooming is becoming more popular, more in demand, more profitable, more fun and less labor intensive for the groomer! There’s a lot to consider; it’s a giant step but if you take the plunge the rewards can change your life in a big way, everyday.

 

Straightaway, The News

Straightaway, some exciting news from Go Mobile And Succeed! I’ve been busy, busy, busy again this summer daydreaming about grooming and the grooming industry. 

The escapades began in July with the New England Pet Grooming Professionals held at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick, RI. This show was previously held in October but was moved to the summer. It was the fifth time I have attended. It’s a small, cozy show three hours from my home. I had a great weekend shopping, watching the competition grooming, meeting up with old and new friends, and presenting my seminar Go Mobile And Succeed on Saturday morning. Linda Claflin, the producer of the show does a great job. You can find her running around making sure all the important details are taken care of. I managed to grab her for a quick picture but it wasn’t easy!

Thursday it’s off to the All American in Chicago where I’ll be meeting up with my grooming buddies again. I received two emails this summer that made my heart skip a beat! September is going to be a busy month for me. I’m off to Groom Expo in Hershey, Pennsylvania for the Barkleigh Awards where I was nominated for Blogger Of The Year and Up And Coming Speaker and then off to Las Vegas where I was nominated for Mobile Groomer Of The Year. All I say say is WOW! I just want to thank everyone who voted for me. I will tell you all that I am 100% committed to everything I do everyday and always have lots of new plans and ideas for the future. Keep your fingers and toes crossed for me.

Daryl Conner recently called me the “Energizer Bunny” on Facebook. It’s so true! I’m a list maker and a goal setter. I envision, plan, commit and set a deadline for the things I want to achieve, both short and long term. Anybody can do it. Give it some thought and decide what would you like to accomplish. It can be as small as eating healthy by making your lunch everyday or as big as raising your prices. Make sure your goals are realistic and attainable so you can set yourself up to succeed. I believe in the things I plan to do. That’s how I make it all happen.
