Recently I had the opportunity to interview an icon in our industry. Scott Wasserman , better known as Mr. Terrier, has been a successful professional handler, grooming competitor, speaker and grooming contest judge....well decorated in the industry including having won many BIS awards as well as the infamous title of Intergroom International Groomer of the year. Below is part 1 of a two part interview.....
Hello Scott! Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions for those of us who want to know what makes you tick! Although you are a dear freind of mine, some of these questions even I have not ever asked you, so, I'm excited to hear your answers!
What was your defining moment that made you want to be a professional pet stylist?
I wouldn't say taht it was a defining moment, but I just love dogs! I started in Airedale Terriers when I was 10 and had learned to hand strip. After high school, I went to apprentice with 2 different top terrier handlers and then in 1990, moved to Boston to work for one of the foremost Airedale breeders. She also owned a boarding kennel and I ended up learning how to groom. At the time I only knew how to hand strip Airedales and had never touched a clipper. I didn't have much time to go learn, so it was pick up a clipper, look at a picture and make it look like that. A few years later, a friend of mine from dog shows showed me a flyer for NEPGP and said "Wouldn't that be fun?" I got a first with a H.S. Airedale and a 3rd with a mixed and that was enough to give me Best All Around B division. I was HOOKED! The rest is pretty much history!
