Hi! My name is Kim West. I'm a Graduate of the New York School Of Dog Grooming (Nov. 1984) and National Certified Master Groomer through NDGAA. I have been in dogs since the age of 12 with my first Am. Cocker Spaniel. At 17, I attended Pensacola Fl. Junior College and graduated from their Veterinary Assistant program in June of 1984. Passion for pets is a lifelong and rewarding journey. I have competed in grooming competitions nationally since 1994 accumulating over 50 placements, some of which include, Gold Medal Poodles 1999 Intergroom, Handstrip Terrier Silver Medal 2001 Intergroom, Wahl Artistic Innovations Grand Champion, Best in Show Div. B 1998 Gateway to the West, Best in Show Div. A Gateway To The West 1999. I was also nominated for the Cardinal Crystal Achievement Award for Grooming Contest Judge of the Year 2008. Currently I show my Standard Poodle and share my home with three wild and crazy Miniature Schnauzers. I have three children and one grandchild all of whom I love with all my heart. I love to teach others the art of pet styling, and share the information that others have graciously shared with me over the years. I believe in paying it forward.
It seems that a recent post of mine on facebook has gotten some interesting responses.
It was due to reading these responses that I thought this might be an interesting subject to touch base on
and get feedback.
How do YOU handle pricing your services on difficult pets to groom?
On Matted pets?
On Aggressive pets?
On Untrained unruly pets?
Do you charge by the hour? A certain dollar amount?...It will be interesting to see how things are handled in various regions of the country. I thank you in advance for your participation! Happy grooming :) Kim
As pet care givers, we are entrusted with not only "someones' pet" ,
but, many times, "someones' family member".....but what about those who
come to us neglected, not thin, no, fed well by scraps thrown on the
ground, their world restricted by a chain or fence, with little more
than a pat on the head from time to time, or someone screaming "SHUT
UP!"...Bad attention better than none....they come to us scared, unsure
of everything around them, because the only time they escape their
normal confines are when they go to The Vet where Scary things happen,
or , to be shaved and bathed, where strange hands and tools are
manipulating all of their body parts, loud dryers, made to stand upon a
small surface off of the ground.....it is when one of these animals
cross our table, our position is shifted from pet stylist to animal
welfare caregiver. These people stay just under the radar of the law.
If we treated humans like this, well, we would be prosecuted to the
fullest extent of the law, and persecuted by the public at large. So,
remember to change hats when you have an animal come in under these
conditions, remember to stay calm, ease them through the process, don't
reinforce their fear. Give them the spa treatment they deserve, for they
are in need of a caring hand to be laid upon them. They need to know a
nurturing , healing touch.......it is why we are pet stylists....Happy
grooming , Kim
