Music fans are always putting together lists of the Desert Island Discs they'd bring with them if they were stranded on a desert island. Everyone always has fun sharing their lists and commenting on each other's choices.
Now it's time to get groomers in on the fun.
So Here's The Scenario...
After taking a tropical cruise to relax from your full-time grooming job, you fall overboard during a highly competitive game of shuffleboard and wash up on the Island of Ungroomed Dogs.
Strangely enough, the island’s grooming shop is equipped with a table, a tub, all your favorite shampoos, and a dryer. But there are no tools to be found.
In a bottle on the beach, you find a rolled up copy of the latest PetEdge catalog. Although we have over 17,000 items in our catalog and online, you can only bring 10 of them with you on the island.
So what 10 grooming tools would you need to get started?
To kick off this new feature, we asked one of our on-staff groomers, Audrey Vogt, to be our first groomer castaway. Audrey works with our product support team. If you've called us with a question recently, you might have talked to her!
Here's what Audrey chose to bring with her:
1. Andis UltraEdge 2-Speed Clipper
"I chose this clipper because it has the two speeds to handle most coat types, which should cover almost any breed dog I’d see. Plus, it's low maintenance, so I won’t have to spend a lot of my time oiling and replacing the parts. It also has an enclosed motor, so hopefully sand/dog hair won’t get in and slow things down."
"Another reason why I picked this clipper is because it includes the new Andis Magnetic Chrome Universal Comb Set free with purchase. Which I thought would make a good addition, since I can’t bring more than 10 items. I only need to buy one extra blade and I end up getting eight more cutting lengths to choose from."
2-4 Master Grooming Tools Swivel Select Shears
(Straight, Curved and Thinning)
"I chose the Swivel Select sSears as a set because the range of motion in my thumb is limited due to an old injury. I find that a shear with a very short shank like that of a the Swivel Series is extremely comfortable for me to use. I also like how light these shears are."
5. Master Grooming Tools Flexible Slicker Brush Double Hard
"It has the weight and texture I prefer. I like this type of slicker because it's a good all-around brush to use on most coat types."
6. Master Grooming Tools Rainbow Greyhound Comb Face/Finishing
"A face/finishing comb is something that every groomer needs. I picked this one because it’s pretty."
7. Master Grooming Tools Ergonomic Dematting Tools 6-Blade
"I prefer this dematting blade to the other ones because it works faster and is less painful for the dogs. Yes, it takes a lot more out of the coat. But there is less pinching and you can get in the tighter and smaller spaces."
8. Master Grooming Tools Ergonomic Undercoat Rake 20 Pins Long
"Because every groomer should have one."
9. Andis UltraEdge Clipper Blade Size 4½ FC
"This is my favorite blade so I can’t go without it (well I could, but I wouldn’t be very happy). I think this length looks good on just about everything."
10. Dremel 2-Speed Cordless Grinder
"I picked this Dremel because I tend to prefer cordless to corded grinders, and I much prefer grinding a dog’s nails to clipping them."
Audrey's Bio:
"I have been grooming professionally for just about 5 years. I apprenticed in two different salons, both a privately owned shop and a major retail chain. All in all I was an apprentice for 2 of the 5 years that I have been grooming. I currently work as a mobile home groomer in my free time.
Other credentials include more than 2 years as a PCDT dog trainer and Vet Tech assistant.
If I was marooned on a desert Island, I would bring my Zune and "Super Freakonomics" by Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner to keep me busy."
