According to the ASPCA and the American Humane Association, animal shelters in our country take in between 5-7 million pets per year.  The really heartbreaking statistic however, is that of those 5-7 million pets, between 3 and 4 million of them are euthanized every year because they aren't adopted by a loving family! 
 

Last year, our goal was to groom 1190 shelter pets during October.  You all responded to the call for help and you groomed 2126!  With your help, we can make an even bigger impact on adoptions if we all join together again this October.  But we can make an even bigger difference this year.  Once again we are asking you to join us and with your help we're sure we can!
 
It's not that we're asking you to take the month off to groom shelter pets.  If you can schedule one day a week, or one day during the entire month of October or just one appointment slot when you have it available to groom on of these shelter pets, you will have made a difference.  As a Wag'n Tails family, and we're over 1600 owners out there now, we can make a large dent when you look at us as a group.
 
This event will coincide with National Adopt a Dog Month this October with the goal of providing shelter dogs with free grooming to make them so adorable they'll get adopted into a warm and loving home where they belong.  A professional groom by a skilled pet stylist like yourself will do much, much more to get one of these pets adopted than a quick bath by a volunteer.  You and your high level of expertise are the keys to getting them a home!
 
Wag'n Tails will hold up our end of the Mobile Grooming for a Cause event too.  We have heavily publicized Mobile Grooming for a Cause and Adopt a Dog Month in October.  We are hitting all the major media outlets all over the country as well as smaller, more specialized pet industry media.  Last year we made the CBS Early Show.  CLICK HERE to see it!  I know many of you already do your part on a regular basis and we commend you for that.  You are special, we applaud your efforts and we hope that you'll join us this October.
 
We will email each of you that choose to participate a complete kit of instructions on how to get the attention of your local media outlets.  This kit will include a fill-in-the-blank press release for you to send out!  In early November, we'll send you the official, suitable for framing Certificate of Participation in Mobile Grooming for a Cause and the 2011 version of the Mobile Grooming for a Cause participation graphics for your van.
 
Many of the participants reported adoptions on a bunch of those pets after they were groomed.  The vast majority of the shelter pets they did were basic bath and brush grooms to boot so they didn't have to spend a lot of time sprucing them up.  Please look at your schedule and get on board with us in this awesome event!
 
How to participate

It's easy; just send me an email (john@wagntails.com) your name, your company name and the number of shelter dogs you plan to groom in October. 
 
Once a week or after you groom at a shelter, send me an email, fax or call with the number of dogs you groomed at each shelter.  If you're aiming for the $5000.00 cash, include the shelter name, phone number and a contact person there.  The contest will be on the honor system but we will verify the winner's grooms

To help us manage this process, please let us know that you will participate by Monday, October 3, 2011.  You can still participate if you respond later than that date and you can still be in on the contest too but it will help us out if you respond as soon as you can.

When you tell us you're participating, we will send you an email with further instructions and your press release kit for your local media.
 
We also want to say that we know how busy each and every one of you are so if you can only groom just one shelter dog, it will make a difference.  If you have an empty slot in your schedule one day or if you have a cancellation or a little bit of spare time please try to groom a shelter dog.  All we ask is that you do what you can to help.

Shaffia Galis-Menendez won the Mobile Groomer of the Year Award over 3 other worthy nominees at the Cardinal Crystal grooming awards ceremony last week.  The ceremony was held September 13, 2011 at the SuperZoo Expo and Conference at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV.

 

 Galis-Menendez is the owner of “Best of Breed” pet grooming of Belleville, NJ which includes a salon and a Wag’n Tails Pet Stylist Elite mobile grooming van.

  “I was thinking that when they called the winner, I would go over and hug her and congratulate her.  Then I heard my name and I looked around and everyone was telling me go get your award, you won!” said Galis-Menendez.  “When I got up to the podium, I had to hang on to it to keep from passing out from the excitement.  I was crying up there while I was thanking my husband and of course, Wag’n Tails for all their support” she added.  “I’m thankful for the award and I will continue to earn it by making myself better every day” Galis-Menendez concluded.

Our customers have been talking again, and we're still listening!  This time they've been asking us for a mobile version of the Catty Shack Vac to take advantage of cat grooming opportunities in the mobile grooming marketplace.

New Hybrid Power Supply Option on Pet Pro Van and Pet Stylist Elite!

Significantly Reduces Fuel Use and Dramatically Increases Generator Life!

The inverter/generator system lets you maximize your fuel efficiency by selecting the power source that is needed for the task.

For example, there are 4 stages during the grooming process:

Stage One: Initial prep work (trimming nails, cleaning ears, doing pads, pattern work).

Stage Two: Bathing

Stage Three: Drying

Stage Four: Finishing Work

How it works:

The inverter simply changes 12 volt DC power from the batteries into 120 volt AC power so you can operate your lights, clippers and other appliances that plug into a wall socket.

The Wag'n Tails hybrid system is what is known as a "smart" system in that the system recognizes when the batteries need charging.  The generator is started automatically and charges them up and then shuts the generator down when they are charged.  It's simple to operate.  You don't need to monitor your battery levels like other systems out there.  This is critically importantbecause if you continuously discharge your batteries too much, they fail very fast.  This worry is completely eliminated in our system

Frequently Asked Questions

How will this new inverter/generator hybrid power supply benefit me?

1. Fuel Savings- The generator consumes about ½ to ¾ of a gallon of fuel per hour depending on the electrical load it has to carry.

The inverter/generator hybrid will reduce the need for the generator by 50% or more depending on the A/C usage over the course of a year. The generator will use less fuel when it's running because it's supplying a lighter electrical load due to the other appliances being run off the inverter.

Assuming a fuel savings of fifty percent translates into well over $10,000 saved during the course of a 5 year period at current fuel prices.

All of this means the inverter/generator hybrid power system can fully pay for itself in about 2 years on fuel saving alone!

2. Generator Maintenance Savings- Generators require routine maintenance.  Every 150 hours for an oil change and every 450 hours for a tune up. Our average customer pays for an oil change every month and a tune-up every 3 to 4 months. The inverter/generator hybrid system significantly decreases the frequency of maintenance versus the traditional generator only system. This can cut your annual generator maintenance costs in half or more.

3. Increases generator life- If you are running the generator for half the time compared to a generator only system, it stands to reason that the life of your generator will double.

Who will benefit from this inverter/generator hybrid system?

If you live in a climate that doesn't require air conditioner usage twelve months out of the year, this system is for you.  Why? Because A/C units require the higher amperage power supply produced by the generator to run.

Essentially, the less frequent you use your air conditioner, the more benefit you will receive in savings from this hybrid system.

For example, someone that lives in the Florida Keys or Phoenix and uses the A/C year-round will not realize the same savings as someone that lives in a more moderate climate and runs the A/C less.

How much is this option on Wag'n Tails Elite or Pet Pro Van?
The option is $4899 and is installed during the normal production process right here at our Wag'n Tails headquarters.

Can this system be added to an older Wag'n Tails Elite or Pet Pro Van?
This is certainly possible but may be cost prohibitive. In order to add this system post production it would require new wiring for nearly all appliances and outlets. This would involve removing much of the existing conversion walls and equipment and installing the inverter and batteries. The parts and most importantly extensive labor hours require to retro fit an existing unit would double the cost of this option compared to a new Wag'n Tails Pet Pro Van or Pet Stylist Elite. This inverter/generator option is much more cost effective to add during the production process when the unit is being built.

PET HAIR NEEDED! Pet Stylists asked to help with Gulf oil spill cleanup!

So far Wag'n Tails has heard from 3 of our owners asking us to get the word out.  Pet hair is dearly needed to help clean up the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Keeping Old Man Winter at Bay-winterization tips from Jamie Hahn

The goal of this post is to remind you that it's time to get your winterization procedures out and dusted off.  With the busy holiday season upon us, we want to be sure we are doing our part in helping you to minimze your downtime!

This is the time when you want to start taking your winterizing precautions at night as the temperatures fall into the thirties...and lower! 

 
Granted, doing this will use some electricity and a little propane but that is far outweighed by what you'll face when rescheduling your appointments because your Wag'n Tails has become an iceberg instead of a grooming vehicle!
 
Following our procedures for winterizing your vehicle will save you big bucks and a headache so read on Wag'n Tails family member.

Rule #1 is: Don't listen to what you hear from others.  The chat boards and other mobile grooming "experts" are sometimes providing more bad information than good when it comes to winterizing your Wag'n Tails.
 
The winterization procedures we have developed will work best because we designed your Wag'n Tails to perform in all weather.
 
When you read or hear "my way is better than Wag'n Tails" either close your eyes if you're reading or put your hands over both ears while humming very loudly if someone is telling you about their "better way".
 
Your Wag'n Tails is specifically designed to be winterized with our procedures.
 
Use your owners manual!  Turn to the winterization procedures and read and follow the directions exactly as written.  There is a section that covers winterization for those Wag'n Tails equipped with the optional anti-freeze system and those without it.

You also have a laminated sheet (or two if you have the optional anti-freeze system) that will walk you through the procedure.  If you can't locate your owners manual or the laminated sheet(s), call us and we'll send you free replacements.
 
If you have the anti-freeze system on your Wag'n Tails, you have 2 laminated sheets.  One is the standard procedure that all owners should use.  The second sheet is specifically for the anti-freeze system.  Use the procedures on both sheets or simply follow the directions in your owner's manual but be sure to use both procedures.
 
If you don't have the anti-freeze system, follow the procedure on the sheet that came with the van or as shown in the owner's manual.

Dos and Don'ts 
DO The winterization procedures if the temperature is expected to be 35 degrees or colder (wind chill can easily cause the temperature to be below freezing).
DO Keep an eye on your propane level by checking it DAILY!
DO Plug your Wag'n Tails into an outlet that has no other electrical load on it.
DO Make sure you have plenty of RV anti-freeze in your anti-freeze tank.
DO Be sure your furnace fan is running and heat is coming from the registers before you turn the thermostat down to the lowest temperature setting at night.
DO Use a ceramic space heater in the back of your Wag'n Tails and plug it into the outlet labeled "Back Plug" in the rear of the van.
DON'T Use a space heater in the salon area.  Doing that will cause the furnace to remain off.  This prevents heating of the water lines near the floor of your unit and can cause them to freeze.
DON'T Use automotive anti-freeze in you anti-freeze system.  Use only pink RV anti-freeze.

DON'T Try to shortcut the winterization procedures to save a few bucks.  It's just not worth it.

DON'T Hesitate to call us for advice on winterizing if you aren't sure about any part of the procedure.

Just remember to follow your winterization procedures and we'll all get through the season in one piece!

First Annual MobileGrooming for a Cause during ASPCA & AHS "Adopt A Shelter Dog" Month

The ASPCA and the American Humane Society have designated the month of October as National Adopt A Shelter Dog month.  All of us at Wag'n Tails want to ask for your support in grooming as many shelter dogs as we possibly can during October 2009.

Our goal is to make the precious lives of these dogs fulfilled by making them more adoptable through the kind, loving and skillful care of your hands!

We will email each of you that choose to participate a complete kit of instructions on how to get the attention of your local media outlets.  This kit will include a fill-in-the-blank press release, pets groomed reporting form and a sample script for calling on the shelters.  In early November, we'll send you the official, suitable for framing Certificate of Participation in Mobile Grooming for a Cause.

To provide some additional motivation, the client that grooms the most shelter dogs in October will receive a five day/four night vacation* for two at a beautiful Caribbean resort including lodging and airfare!  Who wouldn't like a little beach vacation that time of year?

*Some reasonable restrictions apply.  Call for details.

So how do you participate?  It's easy; just send an email to john@wagntails.com with your name, your company name and the number of shelter dogs you plan to groom in October.  Once a week or after you groom at a shelter, send us an email with the number of dogs you groomed at each shelter.  If you're aiming for the free trip, include the shelter name, phone number and a contact person there.  The contest will be on the honor system but we will verify the winner's grooms.

To help us manage this process, please let us know that you will participate by Monday, September 21, 2009.  You can still participate if you respond later than that date and you can still be in on the contest too but it will help us out if you respond as soon as you can.

When you agree, we will send you an email with further instructions and your press release kit for local media.

We also want to say that we know how busy each and every one of you are so if you can only groom just one shelter dog, it will make a difference.  If you have an empty slot in your schedule one day or if you have a cancellation or a little bit of spare time please try to groom a shelter dog.  All we ask is that you please do what you can to help.
